REPORTS:

Report by: Tom Peden

Douglas Creek has an exciting history of gold production. Every year, prospectors recover gold from its gravels. ALthough this area is not the mother lode of Ca. It is worth prospecting these claims.

PROSPECTS:

Douglas Creek placers are among the best in Wyoming, so the prospects look good.

WY-9 -- AMANDA 25 & 26

LOCATION

TOWNSHIP, RANGE, SECTION: T28N R98W SEC. 9

USGS TOPOGRAPHIC MAP: Radium Springs

RIVER OR STREAM: Sweetwater River

COUNTY: Fremont

STATE: Wyoming

Reported by: Tom Peden

DIRECTIONS:

Go due south from Alantic City on Rd. #512 (maynot be marked), cross Rock Creek, by Fire Station.Road goes up steep hill, at the crest the road heads in an easterly direction. Follow this road for about four miles, to the first major intersection. There was a sign pointing to Handcart Willies monument. Take a right, on Lewiston Rd. Follow Lewiston Rd to the east for about eight miles, take the second road heading south about four miles past Rock Creek. There are two roads, close together, one heads up the hill where the other, the one you want, traverses the hill side. If you start heading west, you've taken the wrong road. No matter however explore this area. You cross a small divide, then drop into Burr Gulch. Take the roads that lead to the south and east, nothing is well marked. Once you hit the Sweetwater River, follow the river east to the end of the road. This is about half way on the southern boundary of Amanda 25, which lays to the north. Amanda 25, is to the east.

REPORTS:

Report by: Tom Peden

Burr gulch, drains the Burr Mine and other lodes. The creek in Burr gulch, drys up quickly after the melt off. You can find Au. throughout this whole claim with a metal detector, mostly fine pin head size. The Sweetwater River has placer Gold, and with a permit it's worth dredging. The canyon to the east is interesting to prospect, a few mineralized areas. Some quite well worth prospecting.

WY-10 -- AMANDA 8 & 23

LOCATION

TOWNSHIP, RANGE, SECTION: T28N R99W SEC. 2

USGS TOPOGRAPHIC MAP: Lewiston Lakes

RIVER OR STREAM: Strawberry Creek

COUNTY: Fremont

STATE: Wyoming

Reported by: Tom Peden

DIRECTIONS:

Head out of Alantic City the same as for Amanda 25,&26. But don't turn south, the road follows the Strawberry Creek drainage skirting the steep canyon on the ridge to the south of Strawberry. The road ends about in the center of Amanda 8.

REPORTS:

Report by: Tom Peden

Found very little color panning the gravels in the creek, didn't dig very deep. Found a few small flakes with metal detector. Didn't prospect the geology of the area. Looks to me that the gold was washed into these claims from up creek.

PROSPECTS:

Prospects are good.

WY-11 -- AMANDA 18 & 21

LOCATION

TOWNSHIP, RANGE, SECTION: T29N R99W SEC. 3 and 10

USGS TOPOGRAPHIC MAP: Miners Delight

RIVER OR STREAM: Little Beaver

COUNTY: Fremont

STATE: Wyoming

Reported by: Tom Peden

DIRECTIONS:

Just south of the 'divide' of Red Canyon, east from the old Iron Mine and State Shops, take road #237 towards Alantic City. About one mile south, take the right turn onto road 2324. This road takes you to the Miners Delight district. Stay on the main road passing the cemetery looping to the south, head in a south easterly direction for about 1 mile, just before the road cross's the creek, there is a two track road going east to your left. Follow this road down the draw for about two miles. This draw is Horace Gulch. The claim Amanda 21, is clearly shown in the claims guide from here. When the road cross's the creek (dry most of the year) you are almost on the east boundary of the claim. Follow road around to the west for Amanda 18.

REPORTS:

Report by: Tom Peden

Found one good spot on this claim, a small pocket of gravels less than one half yd. But was it ever rich. Most of the geology of the claim is washed in material. A few outcroppings of igneous formations. Haven't prospected Amanda 18 yet. Lots of overburden.

PROSPECTS:

Prospects are good.

WY-12 -- AMANDA 24, 28, 29 & 30

RIVER OR STREAM: Meadow Gulch, Yankee Gulch

COUNTY: Fremont

STATE: Wyoming

Reported by: Tom Peden

DIRECTIONS:

Turn off Highway on rd. 237, towards Alantic City, Take first main road to the left, east, follow this road eastly to the cemetery. Turn to the left, take the first road tot he right, then the next left. Follow this road to the second creek crossing. The south west corner of Amanda 28 is just past this creek crossing. The map in the claims guide is very confusing not actuate at all. The north west corner, (south east of Amanda 24) is about one hundred feet north of the fence line (drift fence). Follow this road west, then south to the top of the ridge, go east along ridge to Amanda 30.

REPORTS:

Report by: Tom Peden

I was last in this area three years ago, spent a couple of weeks prospecting. I have many memories from trip. From having a moose chase me, to almost falling into a snow covered shaft, and finding some gold. Spring comes late in this elevation. Last part of May, middle of June some years. For most of us, this is not a day trip. This area is one of the best gold mining areas in Wyoming. There is alot of ground to cover, and a lot too see, and do. Cannot see or do it all in a weekend.

On Amanda #24 follow the creek northeast past the fence, about fifty feet further down creek, you'll find a newer diggin's work this area. On to the north east, you'll find the 'head' of an old workin's. These gravels are quite rich, need a highbanker. Gold can be found in most of the surface dirt. I believe that it, the gold, is eroded from a layer of conglomerate, that outcrops just south of the road. There is lode sources of gold further to the south.

I've found two major types of gold in this district. To the north of the conglomerate, the gold is fine, and well worn. As is the gold found in the conglomerate. South of the outcropping, you find beautiful rough nuggets.
