Virginia was one of the first gold producing states. the earliest printed reference to gold was when Thomas Jefferson reported on a 4 pound rock that contained 17 dwt. of gold. The rock was found on the north side of the Rappahannock River about 4 miles below the falls. Most of the gold bearing area lies just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains in a belt that is about 15 miles wide and 200 miles long. The total amount of gold produced in Virginia was around 170,000 ounces.

In the Woodlawn area, you can find exposures of cellular quartz veins that contain gold. Look for hornblende-mica schists deposits to find gold with pyrite. Gold can be panned in Crooked Creek, near Woodlawn.

There are many areas in the southern tip of the county near Morrisville, Sumerduck and Pineview that would be worth exploring. All the South flowing streams is what I would check out.

Northeast of Morrisville 2.3 miles, on a 594 acre tract of land along a dirt road off Rout 634, about 1.6 miles east of its junction with Route 806 is the Franklin Mine. The Franklin Mine is one of the most notable lode gold mines in Virginia. It was operated from 1837 until 1877, when it caved in.
