NEWS RELEASES:

UPPER DUNGENESS ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR ROAD REPAIRS

HOODSPORT, WA Visitors planning on accessing the Upper Dungeness Recreation Area should be aware Forest Service Road #2860 will be closed at milepost 10.1 from September 16 until approximately September 30, 2002. The road closure is one mile before the Upper Dungeness and Royal Basin/Lake Trailheads, and four miles before the Tubal Cain Trailhead. "The road will be closed to all vehicle traffic while the road contractor is making necessary repairs to the roadway," states David Craig, Hood Canal District Ranger. "It is important for all users to have their vehicles removed from beyond the closure area by September 16, as the roadway will not be passable to automobiles once construction begins," emphasizes Ranger Craig. Hikers will be able to access the trailheads, but parking along the road before the closure is limited, as is the area for turning a vehicle around.

Currently in progress, is a culvert replacement project on the access road to the Staircase Area of Olympic National Park. The Staircase entrance is closed to vehicle access until approximately September 17, but is open to pedestrian access via the Shady Lane Trail, with parking at the Dry Creek Trailhead. For information about either road project, call Quilcene (360) 765-2200, or Hoodsport (360) 877-5254.
