Trip: Third Beach to Oil City

Just a quick note to let you know we had a great hike and appreciate your very accommodating service. The driver was very nice and provided us with some good local info. I first learned of your business in National Geographic Adventure magazine.

Thank you,

Nick

Subject: Fwd: 06-07 8:30 am CHAMBERLAIN (2) MEET RANGER STATION FORKS LEAD TO 3RD BEACH - SHUTTLE TO OIL CITY

Hello,

I scheduled a shuttle for the past Saturday(see the attachment which is the email I received). It stated that I had a reservation for June 7th at Forks Ranger Station at 8:30 am. We waited 45 minutes and no one showed up. The ranger attempted calling many times with no answer. Finally we had to drive to the oil city trailhead to start our hike. I would like you to know that getting back to our car was no easy task and included 10 extra miles of walking down the oil city road causing us to get home very late Monday night.

I would like some kind of explanation as the shuttle not showing up greatly inconvenienced us. We would not recommend your shuttle service and will probably be writing a letter to the Park as they recommend you.

MY RESPONSE

I am glad you wrote to me. I delete all email info as soon as possible so had no way to contact you and apologize earlier. I am aware we did not show. I agree that the attached is the emails from and to you. I did not schedule or have a driver waiting for you for 2 reasons. I told drivers that you were a possible reservation but had not responded with any confirmation of email and had provided no emergency number. I had her stand by in case you called as you were leaving Port Angeles as requested. She received no call and therefore as we had no confirmation of reservation and no call we did not show for shuttle.

I apologize we had a misunderstanding about shuttle. You have every right to complain to park and to me. Please accept my apology. I will include this letter - eliminating all names if desired - in my feedback page if you desire.

Cate

P.S. As a result of this regrettable occurrence rangers have been given all phone numbers and shuttle policy is changed - all reservation emails will note that "no reservations will be set unless confirmation email is received from hikers."

Trip : Third Beach to Oil City

Hey Cate, Dave and I finished our trip, on schedule, Tuesday the 20th. Had a great time, found 3 glass floats, one the size of a soccer ball! Thanks for all your advice and good will. I'm telling all the bad jokes that I can remember.

Kate, thank you for giving us an enjoyable start to a great coast hike last weekend. My brother-in-law Mark particularly enjoyed your jokes. They reminded him of his favorite uncle who passed away last month.

Thank you for your excellent shuttle service on our recent trip. The hike was beautiful and we were lucky with the weather. Sheila was very helpful and professional. We recommended you to several hikers that we met along the way.

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that myself, Roger, and Ed arrived safe and sound back at our car on Sunday night after a wonderful three days on the Olympic Peninsula. We had a great trip! The weather was pretty decent, considering, with some mist and a little rain the first night, clouds most of the second day, but beautiful sunshine on the third day. We saw an eagle, otters, squirrels, starfish, and other tide pool critters. We saw salmon in the Hoh river on the way out.

Thanks very much for your shuttle service, as well as for your (groan!) jokes. It was a very unique way to start the trip!

We got lots of photos and will either put them up on a web page or, more likely, send them along to you to use as you see fit on your web page. I think they capture the flavor of this hike very well.

Thanks again!

Sorry it's taken me so long to say THANK YOU for your wonderful help with arranging our shuttle! The price break was much appreciated, though I think you should only give us about a 30% discount since you still did some more driving.

The beach was fantastic, we got across the Ozette without any trouble (Juniper is a tough woman!), and we found ABSOLUTELY NO GLASS BALLS! I'm not sure what your source was thinking, but we saw: plastic bottles, glass bottles (including some Japanese ones!), and LOTS of plastic net floats.

Two gentlemen we encountered had each found one 3 or 4" glass float, after spending a couple days just combing the beach--apparently we spent too much time hiking and not enough looking around...though we spent a lot of time looking at the sea and the scenery!

Thanks again, I'll make sure to recommend you to anyone I send out that way!
