HIGHWAY 101-OLYMPIC PENINSULA-MILEPOST BY MILEPOST

forest photo Highway 101 is 367 miles long (while in Washington State) - that is a tinge over 1 mile per day for 1 year... Even I must admit some miles don't deserve an entire day's notice - but some deserve years of admiration. I have and will continue to discover and log anything of interest on each milepost. Highway 101 begins in OLYMPIA and heads west, sharing the road with Highway 8 for 1 short mile, until it meanders off towards Shelton and the east side of the Olympic National Park. It then follows the majestic Pacific Ocean around the Olympic Peninsula. At COSMOSPOLIS it turns south - heading for the Oregon border and points south. Regardless how you get to Highway 101.... When you are on Highway 101 note the next milepost. From OLYMPIA ( Milepost 367 ) the milepost number gets lower until it reaches the Oregon border ( Milepost 0 ). For information on Highway 101 in Oregon go to the useful web site OREGON101 .

All Olympic National Park trailheads are reached via Highway 101. Therefore, I have listed 3 routes to get you to Highway 101 - with a starting point of SEATAC airport ....... Click here to go directly to directions to/from SEATAC. The easiest way to find directions to TRAILHEADS is to go to my TRAIL REVIEWS SECTION and choose the trail you are interested in. When you arrive on your trail's review page - click on 'DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD' option and like magic you will be taken to the proper milepost closest to your trailhead. If I say Sol Duc is at Milepost 219 - understand - it is somewhere within that mile....I am not going to say Milepost 219.4. This page is a work in progress. Milepost XXX means I haven't been there since creating this page and will refine the appropriate entry when next there. I am soliciting information about each and every milepost and welcome any/all information or corrections or photos. Please e-mail me with information on stories and/or useful businesses that can be accessed from Highway 101. Will eventually do similar page for State Highways on the Olympic Peninsula. Even though not completed I believe information is useful.
