MILEPOST 334......SKOKOMISH INDIAN RESERVATION ![]() MILEPOST 332-331......HOODSPORT ![]() MILEPOST 331............STAIRCASE TRAILHEAD Just past a touristy mall is HIGHWAY 119....huge sign says "Cushman - Staircase Recreation Area - Highway 119". On one side of road is Model T Pub and Eatery and on the other side is Hoodsport Hamburger & Ice Cream Shop. It is called the Lake Cushman Road and has sign for post office. Go west on Highway 119 (only choice) for 16+ miles. On your way you will pass various other roads (usually on the left) and signs including......In town ranger station...Hoodsport Trail head...Sign announcing entering Lake Cushman Recreational Area...Lake Cushman Dam...Lake Cushman Resort...Camp Cushman Recreational Park. 9+ miles up the road you will encounter stop sign. Left is continuation of Highway 119 (AND YOUR ROUTE) - right is road to Mt. Elinor Trail (7 miles). Continuing on Highway 119 you will pass Big creek Campground...and then come to the END of Highway 119 and a junction. At this point left will take you to Lake Cushman Mt. Rose Valley and RIGHT will take you to the STAIRCASE trailhead. Your choice is wide but gravel and WASHBOARD and SCARY AT NIGHT. You will need to drive SLOW - passing the Mt. Rose trailhead and (right past milepost 14) ANOTHER JUNCTION. The left leg goes to the campground (no sign this direction) and the right continues to the staircase trailhead. At this point the road narrows and you pass a tiny log cabin on left. Shortly you finally see the Olympic National Park sign and gate and PAVEMENT. About 1 more mile brings you to the Park pay point and a lower parking lot (no parking allowed) with porta potty and campground road. You will see Ranger station on hill above parking lot and next to ranger station a road labeled PARKING. Following this road (less than 1/10 mile) will take you above ranger station and to the parking area and trailheads for Wagonwheel Lake and North Fork Skokomish (SKOE..HOME..MISH). Nearest Campground: Staircase Facilities: Ranger station, pay phone, toilets, permit registration, water, stock overnight holding facility. After a short and scenic drive on a gravel road, you will enter the National Park. There is a fee to enter the park of $10 per vehicle which is good for one week. Turn left on Forest Road 25 (HAMMA HAMMA Recreation Area) along the Hamma Hamma River. Follow this paved road 8 miles to trailhead. About 3 miles in is Lower Lena Lake 4 more miles takes you to Upper Lena Lake. Here the trail splits -- to the right it heads into the Valley of the Silent Men, and to the left it climbs to Upper Lena Lake. Or another way to get to the trailheads, including Lake of the Angels or Lena Lake, drive past Lake Cushman State Park ( Milepost 331 ), then hang a right on Forest Road 24 ( Milepost 321 ) and follow it seven miles to Forest Road 2480, taking it eight miles to its junction with the Hamma Hamma Road less than a mile east of the Lena Lake Trailhead. Hamma Hamma is also the major access point to Lena Lake, the Brothers lookout point, Jefferson Lake, etc., and it is the only way to connect with the Jorsted creek road (because of a washout) which connects to Staircase from the North end of Mason County.MILEPOST 317......Forest Road 25 - HAMMA HAMMA ROAD MILEPOST 317......PUTVIN TRAILHEAD Follow Hamma Hamma Road (2 miles north of Eldon) to trailhead Nearest Campground: Lena Creek. Nearest Campground is Collins Campground (1 mile from trail head). Facilities limited to toilet and stock unloading area with hitches and parking on 2510 road. Nice, riverside backcountry campsites can be found along the trail's first five miles. The 23 mile trail starts in the Brothers Wilderness, then climbs to subalpine lake and then on to O'Neil Pass. Follow Dosewallips Road from BRINNON 16 miles to its end at the Ranger station. The first 8 miles are paved - the last 8 miles are gravel. At 14.5 miles, the road is steep with few turnouts and not recommended for trailers because of the large overhanging rock and signed trailhead is on right. At 16.0 miles is NPS Dosewallips Ranger Station (summer) and primitive Dosewallips Campground. Facilities include Ranger station, toilets, water, permit registration, hitch rack, stock unloading area. Road is closed at park boundary from mid October to May. There are many hikes possible from the Dosewallips trailhead, from long and moderate to short and steep.
