The Olympic Peninsula has been showered with accolades in recent weeks for its rugged beaches and teeming wildlife areas. First came the Travel Channel, which named Shi Shi Beach the "best nature beach" in the nation. Visitors to Shi Shi, located between the Point of Arches and Cape Flattery, can expect to see deer, raccoons, river and sea otters, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, oystercatchers and a variety of other seabirds. The beach became part of Olympic National Park in 1976 and borders the Makah reservation. It will be featured in a May 2003 program, "America's Best Beaches. Located on the south end of Shi Shi Beach, POINT OF THE ARCHES is perhaps the most stunning set of sea stacks on the coast, a complete package of defiant arches, tunnels and amazing tide pools. The upturned sandstone shelf just north of the point, along with the archways, provides outstanding leading lines and frames for your images. Plan an overnight with a good morning minus tide to explore the intertidal zone. It is a moderate 4-mile hike in. At the north end of Shi Shi, a series of pocket beaches and not-too-shabby tide pools hides behind a line of offshore sea stacks. The wrecked troop ship General M.C. Meigs lies in pieces here as well.
